Another week off work. This, of course, was the week I should have been in Naples. Never mind.
This is now the week in which I’m ticking off yet more of my to do list.
The plan goes like this –
Go for a proper long walk – nope, not yet. If it’s going to happen, it needs to happen today, looking at the forecast for the rest of the week…
Spend a day on ancestry.com – I’ve managed half a day, and found about 30 more relatives. Time well spent!! Something to do when the weather breaks I think.
Repaint wall – there’s a low wall to the side of my driveway. I’ve attacked the green algae growing on the wall – softened it up with plain water, then squirted neat white vinegar all over it and left it to work. Then rinsed off the vinegar and scrubbed it with bleach. Left it to work, then rinsed off the bleach. Back of the house now smells like a very clean fish and chip shop… Once it was all dry, I painted it. It’s looking good, although it might need a second coat.
Repaint white lines – there are steps up to the back door, and they have white lines painted on the edges. They need repainting – but first I need to scrub everything (as per repainting the side wall).
Clean hall carpet- not yet, but it’s in my sights. Needs to be done on a day when the lodger is out all day, and I’m in all day, both to minimise disturbance for him and so I can keep all the doors and windows open to speed up the drying.
Visit Mum and Dad – Father’s Day. Yes, did this. They’re doing well, all things considered. We went for a walk, as Mum had been concerned about not walking any sort of distance while they were shielding. We walked to a favourite spot, about a mile each way. No trouble at all.
Gardening – yes, have cut the grass, sprayed weedkiller (I know!!) on the path ready for the guy coming to re-lay the tarmac, picked some strawberries and pulled some rhubarb. Next job is to feed the soil with some blood fish and bonemeal to give everything a boost (it’s the least I can do after the weedkiller business!), and trim the edges so the whole garden looks neat and tidy and no-one notices all the other weeds.
Clear out kitchen cupboards – started to do this, then remembered that I had a clear out not long ago when I was making space for the lodger. So I really only needed to sort out the cupboard under the sink – now done.
I’ve also been reading – I re-read ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’ by Maya Angelou, and I’ve just started ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses’ by Choderlos de Laclos. Lots of French that they don’t teach you in school…
And last night I was invited round to friends for a socially-distanced curry. Great food, great conversation – and great to be Out. They’d read one of my recent posts (300 Years a Slave) out at a recent Black Lives Matters protest, which makes me feel phenomenally humble (and chuffed to bits).
