Dry January

Some people that I don’t know are doing Dry January, and I was invited to join the group. Well – that’s not quite true. I know one of them – and she invited me.

I’m not actually even doing Dry January…

When my ex and I first got together, he wasn’t drinking at all. He’d had a major head trauma a few years previously and suffered bad headaches. The headaches were worse when he’d had a drink or two, so he stopped drinking. When we got together I decided to stop as well.

He didn’t drink for about 10 years. I didn’t drink for about three years. It all came to an end in a bar in West Cork in the Republic of Ireland one Paddy’s weekend. But that’s a story for another time…

There were three specific times when I missed alcohol in my non-drinking days. I missed a nice glass of red wine with pleasant company. I missed a glass of wine with a meal. And I missed a thirst-quenching lager on a hot day.

My Dry January chums have come up with a list of other things to drink instead of alcohol. Give it a go –

  • Turmeric, chunks of orange and honey with hot water
  • Ginger, lemon and honey
  • Herbal concoctions
  • San Pelegrino blood orange with frozen berries and mint leaves
  • Tonic water on its own
  • Bitter lemon
  • Sparkling water with lemon
  • Sparkling water with apple and mango
  • Sparkling water with anything
  • Cranberry juice
  • Elderflower cordial
  • Twinnings tea
  • Water infusion bags
  • Coconut water over ice
  • A cup of tea
  • Ice cold diet coke
  • Pepsi max
  • Coke Zero
  • Water

If you’re doing Dry January, all the very best to you. Keep going, you can do this.

I discovered that the fastest way to make me break a streak is putting a tag and limit on it. Tell me I’m in dry january and can’t have a drink? I drink on the first of january.

Instead I made the resolution to quit drinking unless in good company and that feels a lot less forced. Thus manageable.

But I’m expecting my january to still be dry seeing as we’re in lockdown thus – no company 😊🤣

    1. Haha – I like that!! I don’t like that you have no company, but I like that you’re using it to your advantage!!
