How Would You Like Your Trolley Sir?

I was going to have a rant today about customers.

The customers who think they know best (‘I don’t need a trolley…’)

The customers who look surprised/offended/bemused when they get to the till and try to pay with cash. At this point they have walked past 4 (I know – I counted them) signs telling them it’s card payments only, they have been told in person when they were given a trolley that it’s card payments only, there have been announcements over the tannoy that it’s card payments only, and they are standing next to yet another sign that says ‘Card payments only’.

The customers who ask, ‘Is it clean?’ when they’ve just spent 10 minutes in a queue watching you wipe down every trolley as it’s returned, and you’re standing there with sanitizer in one hand and blue roll in the other.

The customers who actually storm off when you insist on them having a trolley.

But, do you know what? I just can’t be bothered anymore.

With every push back, every passive aggressive comment, every ‘fucking stupid’, my skin gets just a little bit thicker.

To the customers who thank us, who tell us we have a good system, that we’re doing a good job, thank you soooooo much – it really does make a huge difference to the day.

You can tell a lot about someone from how they treat the waiter – and from how they treat the trolley person.

Thank you! Having previously worked in food retail I can’t tell you often I had to smile through gritted teeth at the rudeness and aggressiveness of some people. I’m told from ex-colleagues that in the beginning it was like Christmas that went on for weeks and worse they got blamed for the lack of stock by people who had trolleys full of what they did have.
I can’t imagine how bad it’s been throughout lockdown, you have my thanks and admiration.

    1. Yup – we closed the store and just did Click and Collect for a few weeks, which was pretty full-on, then gradually we’ve opened back up. We’re pretty much back to normal now, apart from slightly reduced trading hours. Yes – people seem to think we make the rules up just to irritate them – and of course, they’re right… Hehehe.
