Halfway through my four days off.
This is the four days when I should have had grandchildren to stay, but there you go.
I visited my parents on Thursday and had a new garden path laid yesterday.
And today? Today is even more exciting. Today is the day the gyms re-open AND I finally get my hair cut.
I go to Your Zone 45 in Bingley. During lockdown, when we were all getting a little hysterical, someone suggested that when the gym was finally allowed to re-open they should have a midnight session on the first day back.
And that’s exactly what they did.
So at 00:05 on Saturday 25th July, I went to the gym. There were 12 of us, which was the maximum that could be fitted in. We all had a box to work in, marked out on the floor. There was a piece of cardio equipment in each box, and a bench, and you stayed in the box for the whole session. Pre-covid, you revolved around the equipment so that everyone had one turn on the treadmill, one turn on the rower, one turn on the ski-erg and one turn on the bike. Now, you have the same piece of equipment throughout the session.
I want to give a huge shout out to Jules, who runs the gym. She wrote a Guest Blog for me, and has continued to put sessions online throughout the crisis.
It was good to be back.
I tried really hard not to over-do it – four months without exercise and four months older… My average heart rate throughout the session was 73%. ‘Back then’ it was routinely 83% – so that means I managed to be careful. It’s also a reflection of the fact that I was on the rowing machine for the full session, and I always find it hard to get the heart rate up on that.
Enough excuses!! I’ll be back to 83% before long.
And at the end of the session, we gathered a suitable distance apart and drank champagne out of our water bottles. Happy to be back.
And the excitement doesn’t end there!
Later on today (in exactly 8 hours) I’ll be going to the hairdresser’s. To get my hair cut.
I last had my hair cut on 12th March. That’s four months and 11 days ago. And yes, I have been counting.
I hate how it looks at the moment – it just isn’t me. Right now I’m wearing an Alice band to keep it out of my eyes. I haven’t worn an Alice band since I was 11! I tried a Kirby grip, but that did nothing for me either. I just want short hair, dammit.
And 8 hours from now, all being well, that’s exactly what I’ll have.
Two giant steps on the way back to normality, all in one day.
