Some people that I don’t know are doing Dry January, and I was invited to join the group. Well – that’s not quite true. I know one of them – and she invited me.
I’m not actually even doing Dry January…
When my ex and I first got together, he wasn’t drinking at all. He’d had a major head trauma a few years previously and suffered bad headaches. The headaches were worse when he’d had a drink or two, so he stopped drinking. When we got together I decided to stop as well.
He didn’t drink for about 10 years. I didn’t drink for about three years. It all came to an end in a bar in West Cork in the Republic of Ireland one Paddy’s weekend. But that’s a story for another time…
There were three specific times when I missed alcohol in my non-drinking days. I missed a nice glass of red wine with pleasant company. I missed a glass of wine with a meal. And I missed a thirst-quenching lager on a hot day.
My Dry January chums have come up with a list of other things to drink instead of alcohol. Give it a go –
- Turmeric, chunks of orange and honey with hot water
- Ginger, lemon and honey
- Herbal concoctions
- San Pelegrino blood orange with frozen berries and mint leaves
- Tonic water on its own
- Bitter lemon
- Sparkling water with lemon
- Sparkling water with apple and mango
- Sparkling water with anything
- Cranberry juice
- Elderflower cordial
- Twinnings tea
- Water infusion bags
- Coconut water over ice
- A cup of tea
- Ice cold diet coke
- Pepsi max
- Coke Zero
If you’re doing Dry January, all the very best to you. Keep going, you can do this.
