Grandchild #4 is due, well – now, basically. Want to wait with me?
Four grandkids. Wow. I have a 10 year old, and then after a big gap they seem to be coming along quite regularly – a two year old, a one year old, and a very-nearly-here.
And straight away, things are complicated, because it’s my husband-who-left’s daughter (my step-daughter) who is about to give birth. We’re all of us grown-ups, and my step-daughter has made it very clear that she still wants me in her life and in her children’s lives (she’s already the proud owner of the 10 year old, who I’m proud to call my first grandchild). But we’ve short-circuited that whole thing where, when a couple split up, the relatives split up too. They’ve made it clear that they still want me to be in their life and I’ve made it clear that I want them to still be in my life (to quote Winnie the Pooh’s friend Owl , ‘no blame can be attached to them’).
And here I am – the bootees are knitted, and I’m waiting for the phone to ring.
So…
What can we talk about while we’re waiting?
A bit of a recap I think –
I’ve been writing this blog for just over a month now! We’ve talked about everything from video interviews to stress incontinence – via SatNavs and sensible shoes. I have followers in Europe, Australia, Canada and the States. I’ve met some fascinating people in a strange sort of virtual, 21st century way. The whole blogging thing amazes and fascinates me. I can sit here in my house and type away about whatever takes my fancy – and you, thousands of miles away, can read it, or not, as the fancy takes you. I started writing the blog on our 9th wedding anniversary, which happened to be exactly four months after my husband told me he was leaving. It’s been – and still is – very cathartic.
I want to just take a moment to mention the people in my ‘real’ life and in my ‘virtual’ life (if you’re in both – you know who you are!!) who’ve helped me over the last few months.
There are my relatives – or rather, my husband’s relatives – who have made it very clear that they want to continue to know me. It turns out you can choose your relatives!!
There are the people I volunteer with, who have been so supportive and always available for a coffee and a whinge or a rant, as required. These are women who’ve been there, and know what I’m going through – women who have come out the other side and have helped me to see that I will too. And management have been so helpful too – they even signed my Deed Poll for me!!
There’s the lady who used to run a Gallery – we’d been nodding aquaintances for quite a while, but she ran a writing workshop which I went to, I loved it, and somehow we kind of clicked. Her sister is now following my blog – and when she read about my Extreme Economising she contacted me and offered me a free holiday in her AirBnB. A free holiday!! How kind is that!!
There are the two ladies from French class who scooped me up when I was feeling down and gave me coffee and hot cross buns and suggested a list of jobs that I should apply for. It did get a teeny bit silly when one of them suggested lion tamer – but I used to teach Y3 so I reckon I could give it a go…
And last but not least, my son – 6’3” of the nicest human being you could hope to meet. Always supportive, always encouraging. He used his web-designer skills and his general ‘knowing more about tech than my mother’ skills to help me set up this blog. Thanks hun.
Well, it’s the morning of the day the baby is due. No news yet.

Exciting stuff! Hope you don’t have to wait too long (nor the expectant mother – I remember having to wait up to 3 weeks for 2 of my children to make an appearance, but at least it isn’t too hot and uncomfortable at the moment.)
It is lovely that your step-daughter still wants you as part of the family – I can see why. Lovely to hear that the ‘gallery’ lady (my old friend) has introduced your blog to her sister – you’ll have a grand time, I’m sure. I haven’t met her sister, but as you know, Gallery Lady is very lovely, as is her husband.
I have one grandchild and another is planned, although taking its time, but it is so wonderful to have that next generation come along.
Have fun!
