My thighs ache, my calves ache, and my right hip is complaining a bit.
I used to go to the gym every other day. 45 minutes three times a week.
And then Covid hit and the gym had to close. It’s a wonderful gym, and they started to put exercise classes online, so we could do workouts at home. I have to confess I didn’t do a single one. Self-knowledge is a wonderful thing – and I now know that I need someone to yell at me…
And then the gyms were allowed to re-open. My gym re-organised things so that we each have a workout station, we don’t share equipment during a session, and we’re all able to maintain social distancing. We had a grand re-opening, with a session at 5 minutes past midnight on opening day and a bottle of champagne when we’d finished.
A week later they had to close again, due to a local lockdown.
But we could meet in groups of six in outdoor spaces, and the gym happened to have a bit of outdoor space. They organised outdoor sessions, come rain or shine, but could only have five members plus the trainer at any one session. Jules, the gym owner, wrote a Guest Blog about it all.
And then, finally, they were able to re-open properly again. We were back to full 45 minute sessions, with the full range of cardio equipment – rower, ski-erg, bike, treadmill.
When you book a session, you book onto a specific piece of cardio equipment, and stick with that throughout the session rather than moving around like we used to.
On my first session back, I used the rower. On my second I used the ski-erg. On my third, I used the bike.
All of this means that I haven’t been on the treadmill since March. Six months.
Until the day before yesterday.
Four minutes on the treadmill. Four minutes functional. Four minutes on the treadmill. Four minutes functional. Four minutes on the treadmill. Four minutes functional. And to finish off – four minutes on the treadmill and four minutes functional.
That’s a total of 16 minutes on the treadmill. I loved it.
And yes, I ache. Of course I ache – but it feels GOOD.
